Carbonaceous
Chondrite CK 4
More than 4,5 billion years old, it is one of the oldest known matter found
on earth,
giving rise to many speculations about the origin of our solar system.
CAI's
that are found in them contain microscopic small diamonds with isotopical signatures,
which point not
only to a substantially higher age than that of our solar system,
but obviously it comes from interstellar matter - matter from other
star systems,
which at the origin of our solar system was included and preserved in
the CAIs.
Scientists found about 220 aminocids in carbonaceous chondrites, here on earth we know
only about 30.
Did these kind of meteorites bring life on earth?
John T. Wasson, Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics, UCLA,
Los Angeles: details on Ck 4: Ck4
Macroscopic
Descrition: The exterior of the meteorite
fragments is black and shows some areas with black fusion crust.
The interior is grayish-black, dense, with abundant distinctive curved
fractures. Several Chondrules but not metal are visible.
Macroscopic Descrition (Thin Sections): The sections
show a moderately equilibrated chondrite with some well-definded
chondrules (0,4-1,5 mm) in a gray microcrystalline matrix.
Beside the main mineral olivine some Ca-rich clinopyroxenes and heterogeneous
plagioclases are visible.
Shock effects are pervasive, inclunding undulatory extinction to weak
mosaicism in olivine
and many opaque shock veins brecciating the meteorite (S4).
Opaque minerals are magnetite with ilmenite and spinell exsolution lamellae,
pentlandite, and rare chalcopyrite.
The ore monerals are partially altered to limonite (W2-3).
